HOW TO BECOME A SECURITY GUARD IN ONTARIO

Updated: Nov 28, 2022

Are you looking for a new career? Working as a security guard is a fulfilling career that enables you to contribute to the safety of others on a daily basis. If you have strong communication, problem-solving, and observation skills, and are eager to learn and protect others, being a security guard might just be the perfect career for you. You’ll be pleased to know that the certification process is straightforward and timely.

Eligibility

To be an eligible candidate, you must meet the following conditions:

  • Be 18 years of age or older

  • Be eligible to work in Canada

  • Have a clean criminal record

  • Complete a Basic Security Guard Training course (which Security Guard Group proudly offers!)

Step 1: Course Completion

Security Guard Group is an authorized training entity, offering a 33.5-hour online security guard training course. The course is priced at $59.99, offering a level of affordability that makes it a much more attractive option to many students as opposed to attending a post-secondary institution.

The course is meant to be completed at your own pace over a period of 31 days. This means that you can complete your training at any time of the day, any day of the week - whenever works for you! If you’re feeling a little overwhelmed or fall behind, don’t worry – your account will remain active for 14 days after the 31-day course period, giving you time to catch up.

Step 2: First Aid Certification

Following the course, you will be required to complete Emergency First Aid Certification. You can obtain it with Security Guard Group for as low as $119. Since our Emergency First Aid Certification is hybrid, you spend less time in the class and save time online. Students who already have their First Aid certification do not need to obtain it a second time. You can submit a copy of the documentation to Security Guard Group.

This certification is estimated to take 6.5 hours. In conjunction with the 33.5 hours of the course, you meet the total of 40 training hours required by the Ministry of the Solicitor General.

Step 3: Testing

The next step to become a security guard is taking a mandatory licensing exam through Serco Canada. You are given a testing completion number before taking their test. Upon completion, you can apply for your license to begin working in the field.

Step 4: Apply for Your License

As listed on the ServiceOntario website, you can apply for a license after successful completion of the exam by providing the following:

  • Your testing completion number

  • A passport-quality photograph

  • Two identification documents Guarantor Information Form – the guarantor must be an adult that has known you for a minimum of two years

  • Payment of $80 for the cost of the license application

License applications can be submitted online or by mail. Online applications are typically processed faster. If you choose to apply online, you will need to have your ServiceOntario One-key ID account information available.

Once your application has been submitted, approval can take up to 10 business days. Once approved, you will receive a license in the mail within 2 months.

Next Steps

If you haven’t already, make sure you complete your Workers Health and Safety Awareness Certificate. The certification is free on the Ontario Ministry of Labour website.
